How to Choose Your Clothing Size Online

A size label is only a starting point. Different garments can use different measurements, cuts and fabrics. Before choosing a size, compare your measurements with the chart on the exact product you want to order.

📏 Start with a measuring tape

Use a flexible tape and measure over light clothing. Keep the tape level and comfortably close to your body, without pulling it tight. Write down the units as well as the numbers.

  • Chest or bust: measure around the fullest part, keeping the tape level across your back.
  • Waist: measure around your natural waist. If a product chart specifies a different point, follow that chart.
  • Hips: measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat.
  • Inseam: for trousers, measure the inside leg of a pair that already fits, from the crotch seam to the hem. Compare only with a chart that gives garment inseam.

🔎 Check what the size chart measures

Body measurements and garment measurements are different. A body chart describes the wearer; a garment chart describes the finished item. A garment usually needs room for movement, depending on its intended fit and stretch.

If the chart gives a flat width, compare it with the same flat measurement on a similar garment you own. A 50 cm flat chest width is not the same measurement as a 50 cm chest circumference. Do not assume whether a number is a width or a circumference if the chart does not say.

Check the units before comparing. One inch equals 2.54 centimetres. Use the product's own chart rather than converting a letter size such as S or XL into a supposedly universal size.

👗 Compare a piece you already enjoy wearing

Lay a similar item flat without stretching it. Compare the measurements that matter for that style: chest and shoulder width for a shirt; waist, hips and inseam for trousers; bust, waist, hips and length for a fitted dress. Follow the measuring points shown in the listing.

For matching sets, check both the top and the bottoms. For a dress or jumpsuit, look at the listed length as well as the width. A model photo can show the style, but it cannot confirm how the item will fit your body.

🧵 Consider the cut and fabric

Look for the listed fabric composition, stretch information, lining and closures. A close-fitting woven style can fit differently from a stretchy knit. A loose cut may be designed to have extra room; choosing a smaller size can change its intended shape.

If you fall between sizes, compare all relevant measurements and your preferred fit. There is no reliable rule to always size up or always size down. When measurements or fabric details are missing, ask before ordering.
